Former India coach Greg Chappell believes Rishabh Pant is transforming the game of cricket with his unconventional and aggressive batting style. He emphasized Pant's match-winning capabilities, noting his significant impact during the Headingley Test.
Despite India's loss in the Headingley Test, Pant's remarkable performance, which included scoring centuries in both innings, highlighted his ability to single-handedly alter the course of a match.
Chappell lauded Pant's rapid scoring rate, emphasizing its importance in securing victories. "His was a phenomenal performance," Chappell stated. "Some of the shots that he played probably weren't in the MCC coaching manual when I last looked at it. He is reinventing the game as a batsman."
Pant recently achieved a milestone, becoming only the second wicketkeeper-batter, after Andy Flower, to achieve a century in each innings of a Test match.
Speaking at a promotional event in Mumbai, Chappell acknowledged the influence of modern technology and bat design on Pant's ability to execute innovative shots. He highlighted the unpredictability of Pant's batting, noting his propensity to attack fast bowlers and employ unconventional shots, which keeps the opposition constantly alert.
Drawing comparisons to Adam Gilchrist, another celebrated wicketkeeper-batsman, Chappell acknowledged Pant's exciting presence on the field.
Chappell stated, "When I first saw him, he was a different sort of player, of course, but he reminded me very much of Adam Gilchrist...the difference that it can make to a team to have a wicketkeeper that can bat at that level and score runs quickly."
Chappell also commented on Shubman Gill's performance as captain, expressing his belief that Gill will improve with experience. He acknowledged that the conditions on the final day of the Test were more favorable for Gill, providing valuable learning opportunities.
Chappell added that the Indian team's think tank would have gained valuable insights from the Test match. He suggested that improved catching and stronger performances from the tail-enders could have altered the outcome of the game. Despite the loss, Chappell remains optimistic about India's chances in the remaining Test matches and believes Gill has made a promising start as captain.
