The fourth season of the SA20 is gearing up, and teams will have the opportunity to retain key players. The player auction is scheduled for September 9 in Johannesburg, promising significant changes and strategic decisions for all franchises.
Each of the six teams will have a significantly increased salary purse of USD 2.3 million to build their squads. With at least 72 slots available, competition for players is expected to be fierce.
Prior to the auction, each franchise can retain a maximum of six players. No more than three of these can be overseas players. This rule encourages the teams to maintain a core of established players while also injecting new talent into their lineups.
Each team can include a maximum of seven overseas players in their 18-member squad, ensuring opportunities for local talent. At least 11 slots are reserved for South African players.
A "wild card" signing is available to each team. They can sign a South African or foreign player whose league fee will not count toward the salary cap. This offers a strategic advantage.
The Right To Match (RTM) card will debut, allowing teams to match the winning bid for a player who played for them in the previous season. The number of RTM cards a franchise has will depend on how many South African players they retained.
Instead of a Rookie Draft, teams must sign at least two Under-23 players in their final 19-player squads. This change emphasizes the development of young cricketers.
Stephen Cook, Head of Cricket Operations at SA20, said that with approximately 60% of player slots needing to be filled, the SA20 Season 4 Player Auction is set to be the most exciting yet. He added that the RTM cards, wildcard players, and an increased salary cap will create interesting situations for teams, allowing them to strategically select their squads.
Richard Madley will return as the auctioneer for the fourth season, which is scheduled to begin on December 26.
