As the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 advances towards the knockout stage, the revamped tournament format has produced a compelling narrative. The expanded field of teams, coupled with innovations like referee cams, brings the competition closer to the scale and excitement of the quadrennial World Cup.
Organizers have framed the event as "a celebration of hope, excellence, and pride," uniting clubs, players, and fans through their shared love for the game. With numerous teams making their debut and the tournament now spanning a month, its significance has undoubtedly grown.
The group stage has concluded, leaving 16 teams to compete for the title. This edition of the Club World Cup has already delivered its share of unexpected results, underdog triumphs, and intense rivalries, both on and off the field.
Auckland City, ranked 4,971st by Opta Power Rankings, entered the Club World Cup as the lowest-ranked team. They found themselves in a group with Bayern Munich, Benfica, and Boca Juniors. The team is comprised of amateurs who compete in New Zealand's Northern League, a league with only 12 teams.
Auckland City started with a 0-10 defeat against Bayern Munich, the heaviest loss of the tournament, and followed it up with a 0-6 defeat at the hands of Benfica.
Facing Argentinian powerhouse Boca Juniors in their final match, Auckland defied expectations. In a classic David-versus-Goliath encounter, the underdogs held Boca to a 1-1 draw, denying them a place in the Round of 16. The result was particularly significant, considering the 4,819-point ranking difference and Boca's storied history.
Lionel Messi's Inter Miami, drawn into a group with Porto, Al Ahly, and Palmeiras, were not expected to progress. However, led by Messi and supported by former Barcelona stars Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets, the team secured a spot in the Round of 16, finishing second in Group A.
Despite securing only one win, it proved sufficient for qualification. Following a draw against Al Ahly, Miami faced Porto. Messi's brilliance, highlighted by a stunning free-kick, led them to a 2-1 victory. A 2-2 draw against Palmeiras in their final match sealed their place in the next round.
The final matchday in Group E witnessed heightened tensions, as River Plate needed a win against Inter Milan to advance. Inter, however, dashed their hopes. The final whistle sparked a confrontation between River's Marcos Acuna and Inter's Denzel Dumfries, requiring intervention from both teams and their staff. The rivalry, dating back three years, saw Acuna taunt Dumfries with a shin guard displaying the 2022 World Cup trophy logo, a reminder of Argentina's victory over the Netherlands in a heated quarter-final.
Extreme heat also impacted the tournament, with teams employing ice baths and cold towels to cool down players. Borussia Dortmund took the precaution of having substitutes watch their match against Mamelodi Sundowns from the locker room to shield them from the intense heat, which the coach described as "sauna"-like conditions. Several games were also delayed due to thunderstorms and lightning.
Adding another layer to the event, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have a presence at the tournament, requiring non-citizens to provide proof of legal status to attend matches.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, less than a year away, the Club World Cup has highlighted potential challenges. Issues ranging from pitch quality to extreme weather conditions have surfaced.
Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham criticized the playing surfaces, stating, "The pitches aren’t great here. The pitches aren’t great at all," after his team's game against Pachuca in Charlotte.
Despite the emergence of underdog stories and a larger field of competitors, the tournament remains a battleground for Europe's elite clubs. Teams such as Real Madrid and Manchester City are still considered frontrunners for the title. Several teams, including Seattle Sounders, Urawa Reds, Ulsan, Wydad AC, and Pachuca, were eliminated without earning a single point.
