Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the cusp of achieving a significant milestone, needing just 97 runs to become the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs. The dynamic left-hander aims to surpass Sunil Gavaskar’s 49-year-old record during the second Test against England at Edgbaston, commencing on July 2nd.
India's Yashasvi Jaiswal eyes a record-breaking performance.
Jaiswal's consistent performance has been a major asset for India, especially during a period of transition in Test cricket. His recent century in the first Test at Headingley underscored his talent, although it wasn't enough to prevent India's five-wicket defeat. Despite setting a challenging 371-run target, India was outplayed by England's Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root.
Team India prepares for the second Test against England at Edgbaston.
Jaiswal's individual form remains a key source of hope for India as they seek to level the series at Edgbaston. He has accumulated 1,903 runs in just 20 Tests, maintaining an impressive average of 52.86.
The current record for the fastest Indian to 2,000 Test runs is held by Sunil Gavaskar, who achieved this feat in his 23rd Test in 1976. Gavaskar later became the first player to score 10,000 Test runs. Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag follow on the list, reaching the 2,000-run mark in their 25th Tests.
With his elegant batting style and composed demeanor, Jaiswal has the opportunity to join and even surpass these legends. His performance could provide a crucial boost for India in a must-win Test match.
