The World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle has commenced with a flurry of activity, as three Test series have already begun to shape the tournament standings. Australia and England are currently leading the charge, while India and the West Indies are looking to gain ground.
Australia's captain Pat Cummins leads his team off the pitch following their victory over the West Indies.
Australia and England have claimed the top two positions in the WTC rankings, both with a perfect 100% points percentage after securing victories in their opening matches. Sri Lanka currently holds the third position after concluding their two-match series against Bangladesh with one win and one draw. Bangladesh, having experienced one draw and one loss, is currently positioned fourth.
Team India faced an unexpected setback in their opening match, despite a strong showing at Headingley. The team had five centurions, but ultimately suffered a defeat as England completed a dramatic chase, gaining a 1-0 lead in the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Chasing a target of 371, England relied on a strong opening partnership between Ben Duckett (149) and Zak Crawley, while Joe Root and debutant Jamie Smith guided the chase to victory with an unbroken partnership. Shubman Gill’s team was left regretting a middle-order collapse and costly dropped catches.
Following the match, Gill acknowledged that India had opportunities but failed to capitalize on them. He indicated that India had been aiming for a larger lead, but the lower order's inability to score runs negatively impacted their strategy.
India will now focus on the second Test at Edgbaston, seeking to quickly recover and maintain their WTC campaign. Currently, they are positioned near the bottom of the table along with the West Indies.
The WTC cycle began with Sri Lanka's tour of Bangladesh on June 17 and will continue until the final in 2027.
